It lacks the flash of a pure race machine, and its appeal rarely translates through specs or looks alone. “Comfort” is undoubtedly a strength, but as a tagline it’s about as ordinary as it gets. And yet, as the “long-ride bike” label suggests, this is the machine we actually spend the most hours with out on the road.

Cannondale’s Synapse stands as one of the genre’s defining names — but the new 2025 model feels like a clear departure from the Synapse lineage we’ve known. Fully internal cable routing, a reworked SmartSense system, the move to a 1x drivetrain — these individual elements matter, but so does the complete build and geometry. This is a bike that demands we step back and reconsider what kind of road bike it’s actually offering us.

Much of that only emerges through riding, so together with Hiroko — who normally rides a SuperSix EVO — we explore what the new Synapse really is, through its design, build, and on-road feel.

Reviewer

Hiroko
Joined a cycling club in her student years and toured Japan on a steel bike. Both are novel on paper, but what they actually deliver is less about added function and more about removing layers of decision and operation from the ride.

1x Drivetrain

SRAM Red AXS XPLR (44T front / 10–46T rear)

The Synapse comes equipped with SRAM Red AXS XPLR’s 1x drivetrain straight out of the box.
At LOVE CYCLIST, we’ve been saying for some time that front-single setups — for their efficiency and ease of maintenance — will become more common on road bikes too. Fewer shifting issues, simpler operation, and the sheer rationality of it in real-world riding: to us, this shift feels inevitable.

The fact that Cannondale has put 1x on the Synapse LAB71 is a clear example of a manufacturer giving that idea concrete form. At E3 Saxo Classic in March 2025, Lidl-Trek riders ran the Red XPLR in a 1×13 configuration — but what matters here is that this isn’t a one-off race setup. It’s been built out as a flagship complete bike.

And in actual use, the front single rarely feels limiting; the upsides clearly outweigh anything you give up. Gear transitions feel natural, and the range covers everything from cruising to climbing. Not having to think about shifting frees you to focus on pedaling and line choice — and that, too, is well-matched to the character of the Synapse.

To the question of “how far can we streamline the endurance category,” the 1x drivetrain offers one clear answer. And that answer overlaps naturally with what LOVE CYCLIST has been arguing all along.

Everything About Gear Ratios, and the Era of the Front Single.

SmartSense Gen 2.0

SmartSense has been updated to its second generation.
